MONMOUTHSHIRE has voted to remain in the EU, with less than one per cent between the votes. The total number of votes was 55,670, with 28,061 voting to remain and 27,569 to leave.
An emotional Jenny McConnel from the remain campaign said: “It’s amazing, we’re so happy.
“The campaign has been very positive, we’ve been very visible and involved a lot of people.
“Feedback across Monmouthshire has been varied depending where we were, but as we got closure to the vote, undecided individuals were shifting towards remain.”
David Davies from the leave campaign added: “It’s a bit of a surprise, but it’s a national vote and I’d rather lose locally and win nationally than the other way around.
“It has been way too close to call. But it’s remarkable, it shows the country is clearly divided. In this campaign we’ve been up against both partys’ machines, and the civil service. Everything has been stacked against us, It’s an achievement to arrange the campaign in such short notice so successfully.”
Paul Matthews, the Presiding officer said: “It was such a close vote, you can see why we took so long to count as it was so close, we needed to double check and make sure."
