Motorists across Monmouthshire are being urged to plan ahead as a wide range of temporary road closures, weight restrictions and speed limit changes come into force this month as part of safety, repair and utility works.

A section of Thornbury Road, Kemeys Commander has been closed following a landslip which made the road unsafe. Monmouthshire County Council confirmed the closure came into effect on May 6 and could remain in place for up to 18 months, or until the highway is made safe. Repair works are also required, with a signed diversion in place via the B4598 Kemeys Road, Clytha Road and back on to Thornbury Road.

Nearby, drivers using Chainbridge on the B4598 in Kemeys Commander will face new restrictions from May 13. A temporary 7.5‑tonne weight limit is being introduced after the bridge was deemed no longer structurally stable enough to safely carry heavier vehicles. The restriction will apply to the full length of the bridge while further assessments and any necessary repairs are carried out. The council has warned that a longer‑term closure of up to two years may be required in future.

In Caldicot, overnight closures are scheduled on Pill House Farm to allow signal and telecommunications maintenance at the nearby level crossing. The short closure will take place overnight only, between 11.55pm and 6am from May 18 to 19. While access for residents will be maintained, no signed diversion will be in place.

Elsewhere, motorists in Llansoar are being warned of a temporary speed limit reduction on the R106 Colomendy Wood Farm to Treherbert Road on May 13. The limit will be cut from 60mph to 40mph along a 460‑metre stretch while the road is reduced to a single lane under temporary traffic lights to allow pole installation works to be carried out safely.

Further south, a major daytime closure is planned on Leechpool Holdings, Portskewett from May 18 to 22 to allow BT cabling and pole works. The road will be closed between 9am and 3pm, with a signed diversion via the B4245, R140 Parkwall, the A48 and Ifton Hill.

Meanwhile, Oxford Street, Chepstow has been closed in its entirety from May 6 for utility installation works, with the closure expected to remain in place until early June. No diversion has been provided.
