A WELL-known Welsh entertainer performed in Monmouth for the first time last week as part of a campaign for children to communicate in Welsh language.

Martyn Geraint will be familiar to audiences who tune into S4C or watch the Welsh National Pantomime. He tours Wales entertaining and educating schoolchildren in what he calls a “jambori.”

160 schoolchildren from Gilwern, Osbaston, Trellech and Cross Ash were at the event, taking parts in activities such as singing Welsh songs and taking part in what Martyn describes as “a bit of fun.”

“It’s not just singing Welsh songs, we play with some water-pistols and just get the kids involved and having some fun,” he adds.

“With the Eisteddfod coming to Monmouthshire next year, events like this should inspire children to get involved and start communicating in Welsh.”

Angharad Wyn Jones, a youth and residential team leader with Urdd, was pleased with the reaction from the children that took part.

“It’s been great to have four schools on board in the first time we’ve been to Monmouth. Hopefully in the future the jambori will develop further at a bigger venue with more children to get more people enjoying entertainment in the medium of Welsh.
