AN online campaign has been set up to save a teacher being sacked from Chepstow School.

According to the online campaign, head of English, Kathy Currie, is facing dismissal from the school.

The campaign was set up by a former English teacher at Chepstow School, Mike Rees.

On the website Mr Rees states: "I taught English at Chepstow School for 37 years and Kathy became a colleague I trusted and respected. In January she will have a final appeal against her dismissal.

"If she fails she will be sacked and her reputation and career will have been destroyed. I am hoping this appeal will take place against a background of widespread support for Kathy from other teachers, present and past pupils and their parents."

Past pupils of the school have commented on the website in support of Mrs Currie. One said: "I am absolutely horrified and appalled!

"I have never heard of anything more ludicrous or absurd. Mrs Currie was and is an amazing teacher.

"I remember her as a kind, caring and patient lady who was not only great at her job, but clearly enjoyed it too. If my daughter has teachers who are even half as great as Mrs Currie is, then she'll be a lucky girl."

Another past pupil said: "I can't believe this. It's outrageous to think that one of the most wonderful and respected teachers to ever enter the doors of Chepstow Comprehensive School is being treated like this.

"I had many years of teaching from this amazing lady whose patience and understanding helped me and many others through our time here. It saddens me to hear such horrid news."

Alexandra Hewitt, a former Chepstow student and celebrated London financier, said: "I'm not sure I would agree with the decision if Kathy Currie were to lose her job.

"I do think it's important that Chepstow Comprehensive starts to base decisions regarding senior staff with a more critical eye.

"Many decisions seem to have been made based upon time spent at the school rather than aptitude for the job.

"I do trust in the opinion of Mr Rees and having his support will make a huge difference to the support of this community."

A Twitter account has been set up in support of reinstating Kathy Currie, where people have been invited to show their support by tweeting.

A spokesperson for Monmouthshire County Council said: "We don't comment on staffing matters, especially when they're not concluded.

"No matter what's been put in the public domain by the campaigners, we won't confirm the name of anyone subject to disciplinary procedures or confirm the reasons."
