SIR, One in five homes in Wales are without mains gas. It is estimated that 8,900 of these homes are in Monmouthshire, and as a result they are often subject to higher fuel bills, often inconsistent pricing, and they have little consumer protection. As winter sets in, some of these customers will be paying significantly more for their heating than others, with no good reason for it. Plaid Cymru has launched a three point plan to help off-grid customers. Firstly, we have launched a website (www. offgridcymru.org) where households can register their desire to get on mains gas, as part of a viable business case to the gas suppliers. Secondly, we are calling on the Secretary of State for Energy to extend the energy watchdog Ofgem's remit to include people off the mains grid, so that off-grid customers have the same protection as on-grid customers, such as regulated prices. Thirdly, I am working on a collective bargaining scheme for existing off-grid customers to negotiate and purchase off-grid gas en masse, in order to secure the best deal for all. Similar schemes have already proved fruitful for on-grid customers. I urge any off-grid homes to sign up to the website so that we can work together to get a fair deal for customers.
