A SCHEME to boost visits to Caldicot town centre is up for discussion.

Before Asda was built, an agreement was made to create clear links between the supermarket and the town centre.

It is hoped this new linkage scheme will encourage pedestrians visiting Asda to combine it with visits to the town centre, enhancing its vitality.

It was agreed by developers that monies would be made available to resurface areas of Woodstock Way, making it pedestrianised.

Case officer, Kate Young, said in the planning report: "In order to ensure that this edge of centre site is acceptable and sustainable, it is vitally important that there are clear links between the existing town centre and the Asda supermarket.

"These pedestrian links will encourage people who visit the supermarket to combine their visits with trips to the town centre.

"To this end the pedestrian links between the two need to be enhanced, an area of public realm between the two needs to be developed and the proposed supermarket must interact with the existing town centre and not 'turn its back onto it', thus encouraging linked trips between the two locations."

The proposal seeks to reconfigure Waitrose car park, resurface and upgrade pedestrian routes and introduce new tree planting and soft landscaping.

Funding will be taken from Section 106 contributions from the Asda development to allow for the upgrade of pedestrian links between Newport Road and the newly pedestrianised Woodstock Way.

The plans have been recommended for approval by Monmouthshire County Council's (MCC) planning committee and will be discussed on Tuesday 5th May.
