THE world’s top cyclists including Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish are to be welcomed to Monmouthshire tomorrow when the Tour of Britain cycle race passes through the county.

Running for 127 miles from Aberdare to Bath, the British Cycling-organised event will take cyclists through the Wye Valley and into the Forest of Dean and Gloucestershire via Bigsweir Bridge passing iconic landmarks such as Tintern Abbey.

The tour will enter Monmouthshire at Mamhilad along the A4042 to Little Mill. From there, cyclists will follow the A472 through Usk and then on minor roads to Gwernesney, Llansoy, Trellech and Tintern before leaving Monmouthshire at Bigsweir Bridge near Llandogo.

Rolling road closures will be in place along the route between 11.30am and 1pm while the race passes through.

A spokesperson from Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) said: “Having previously hosted a stage of the Tour of Britain, we know the value it adds economically and socially and therefore, once again, we welcome its passage through.”
