RESIDENTS in Monmouthshire have been urged to ensure they are registered and eligible to vote in the forthcoming general election.

To vote in the election on Thursday 7th May, names need to be on the electoral register by Monday 20th April.

Registering is quick and simple. To complete the registration process online, visit http://www.gov.uk/registertovote">www.gov.uk/registertovote and complete the steps.

There are a number of reasons why it is important to be included on the electoral register. Elections can be called at short notice and people who are not registered will be unable to vote.

Voting ensures people have a say on the issues of the day, and being on the electoral register can help your credit rating.

Residents can still vote even if they are away by applying for a postal vote by 5pm on Tuesday 21st April or by a proxy application form, where someone else votes on your behalf, (not postal or emergency proxies) by 5pm on Tuesday 28th April.
