MADAM,

Terry Johnson (‘Monmouth is nothing but a giant car park,’ 6th January) complains about the ’choke point’ in Monnow Street.

Really there are two choke points in town, as buses frequently cannot get through Priory Street without traffic encroaching (illegally and dangerously) onto the pavement.

I suggest; turn Priory Street, Monnow Street and Blestium Street into a southbound one-way system. This would put Monmouth in line with similar market towns like Ross, Abergavenny, Brecon, Builth Wells and others.

Visibility and access from St John Street into Monnow Street can then be improved by widening the pavement on the uphill side of this awkward junction.

A40 southbound queues may soon be reduced as a slip road onto the Monmouth Bridge is planned. To further reduce pressure on the traffic lights, why not also build a second slip road for traffic turning left off the bridge onto the A40?
