THE work of one Chepstow woman who set up a charity to support homeless people has been recognised with a Pride of Britain nomination.
Claire Day founded Street Life Sarnies (SLS) which services homeless people south Wales and Bristol, in four years it has grown to include more than 2,000 supporters/members.
On Wednesday, 11th October Mrs Day and her husband Bart attended an event at House of Commons celebrating the 10 nominees for the The Mirror’s Pride of Britain TSB Community Partner Award.
The event was hosted by Carol Vorderman and a range of guests including Jeremy Corbyn, Katie Piper, Ben Shephard and the Rt Hon Sajid Javid congratulated the 10 finalists on their extraordinary contribution to community life.
Mrs Day said it was a privilege to be considered alongside the other nominees.
She said: “It was an amazing event at speakers house at the House of Commons. A real honour to stand alongside nine other awe inspiring nominees doing wonderful work in the community. It is so lovely that TSB supports the community and acknowledges the quiet work that goes on quietly.
SLS uses the kindness of the community to help the homeless, each day posts go out on the group’s Facebook page requesting or offering anything from a sleeping bag to food.
Then, with support from the thousands of members, items are either donated, arranged to be picked up or collected before they are passed on to homeless projects in Chepstow,, Newport, Cwmbran, Cardiff and Bristol.
She said: “For SLS to be acknowledged for the work we do, now four years on, is such a credit to every community member/volunteer that supports and is part of SLS.
“Without their support for SLS we couldn’t help those homeless and in crisis so this award is great to raise awareness of the group and the work we do.
“It was a little surreal meeting celebrities I had grown up with on TV such as Angela Rippon and Ben Shepherd and inspiring celebrities such as Katie Piper.
“Looking forward to hearing now who has got to the televised event.”
The overall winner will be announced in two weeks time and will take part in the Pride of Britain ceremony in London.
