The red warning covers area to the south of the river, including ‘undefended land’ around Hadnock Road, the Mayhill Industrial Estate and parts of Wyesham.
The warning level is described by NRW as: 'Flooding is expected, immediate action required'.
At 6.30am today, the river level at Monmouth was between 4.4 and 4.1 metres and falling. It is expected to peak later today between 4.5 and 4.7 metres.
The rowing club underpass gates are closed.
Elsewhere in the county, alerts, (less severe than an official warning from the environment agency) have been issued this morning for the River Wye in Tintern, and the banks of the River Severn near Beachley. These were downgraded from warnings over night.
High tide at Chepstow will be at 8.45am and at Tintern 9.05am.
As always, there is slow traffic moving on the A48 towards the High Beech roundabout in Chepstow, and at the Dixton roundabout in Monmouth.
