DEAN Farm Sanctuary, based near Chepstow, has launched an urgent winter hay appeal to help feed and care for its 180 rescued animals through the challenging winter months.
Founder Mary Frankland says, “Sadly this year we have not received the funds we need to feed and provide bedding to our vulnerable animals this winter.
“We rely on the kindness of the public to help support our animals. Many have come from traumatic backgrounds and just need the love and care in their final years.”
Hay is currently costing the sanctuary a minimum of £1,600 per month and this equates to a further £6,400 needed to cover hay alone to feed the farm’s donkeys, sheep, cows and ponies this winter.
In addition, the sanctuary must also purchase more straw bedding for its cows and pigs estimated at £1,200 for the next four months making a total of £7,600 which is desperately needed.
“Every bale counts,” said Mary. “We’re doing everything possible to keep costs down, but with hay prices rising and the loss of many regular monthly donations, it’s a real struggle to meet the basic needs of our residents this winter.”
Dean Farm Sanctuary provides lifelong care to 180 animals — including cows, pigs, donkeys, sheep, ponies, hens and ducks — all rescued from abuse, neglect, unwanted or because their owners could no longer care for them. The charity does not rehome animals, instead offering each resident a home for life where they are safe, cared for.
“This appeal isn’t just about hay and straw” Mary added. “It’s about security, warmth, and ensuring that every resident continues to receive the care they deserve. Every donation — large or small — truly helps.”
Supporters can help by donating directly to the Winter Hay Appeal via the Dean Farm Sanctuary website. Donations can also be made as a festive gift, supporting the sanctuary through the coldest months of the year.
