TRAFFIC in Chepstow ground to a halt last Sunday (19th April) as temporary traffic lights again caused chaos in town.
Work to renew a manhole cover and its frame on Hardwick Hill caused long delays across town, with queues extending as far back as Tidenham and Tutshill.
The cries continue from residents for a by-pass to be built in the town, with no sign from the Welsh Government that wheels are in motion.
A government spokesperson said: "Following survey work and a public consultation, we are developing plans for the prohibition of right turn movements at Bulwark Junction and improvements to Highbeech Roundabout to improve congestion and air quality.
"We will continue to work with the local council and others to look at other options to improve air quality and safety on the A48 around Chepstow."
A spokesperson for Monmouthshire County Council said: "A Chepstow by-pass is included as an option within our approved Local Development Plan (LDP) but there has been no other movement so far."
Discussions are ongoing for a 600-house build on Station Road within the LDP, and for hundreds more in neighbouring villages. This could increase traffic movements in Chepstow by thousands.
This helpful sign (pictured) was hung in the window of a house in the centre of town. Its message: "Roadworks on Chepstow hill, long delays and town's rammed," took the edge off the queuing for some, but highlights frustration of residents
