ONLINE searches for “call in sick” skyrocketed across the UK following England’s victory against Spain on Sunday, July 27.
According to research by the team at Fruity King, online searches for the words soared by a staggering 3015% peaking at 8am on Monday, July 28.
Online searches in the UK for ‘sick note’ also rose by 233%, while searches for ‘sick day’ also increased. Searches for ‘Bank Holiday’ also erupted after England won the Euros, increasing by a whopping 1102%.
A spokesperson for Fruity King said: “After an incredibly tense penalty shootout at the Euro 2025 final, it’s safe to say that a fair few workers will be feeling worse for wear the next morning. England’s thrilling victory has certainly sparked a national celebration, and an increase in spontaneous sick days.
“While it was fantastic to witness the reaction to England’s victory at Euro 2025, it’s likely that certain companies will be facing the impact of last night’s victory via a higher number of employee absences.
“While these searches clearly demonstrate England’s emotional investment in the sport, it’s disappointing to see that there may be such a high increase in sickness-related absences today. Ultimately, these searches demonstrate the impact that sporting events can have on workplaces across the country, particularly when it comes to reduced productivity levels, lateness, and unexpected absences.”
Celebrations began after England’s Lionesses defeated Women’s World Champions Spain, to retain their European title.
