CALDICOT School has received a 'good' report from Estyn.

The school was marked as 'good' for both its current performance and the school's prospects for improvement.

The report stated that pupils achieved good standards at GCSE in those indicators that included English and mathematics, and that these had improved sharply over the last two years, making the school better than average.

According to Estyn, Welsh second language standards and teaching at the school are very good and pupils are making good progress in many lessons whilst gaining new knowledge, understanding and skills.

The report showed that the school has good prospects for improvement due to the headteacher, Mrs Susan Gwyer-Roberts, providing strong and effective leadership.

It went on to say that the improvements in leadership in the last two years have had a "significant impact on standards and provision."

In improving Caldicot School, Estyn suggested that Caldicot should provide a daily act of collective worship, ensure all teachers use the information on special educational needs of pupils effectively in lessons and reduce the fixed-term exclusions.

In a letter sent to parents, Chair of Caldicot School Governing Body, Peter Nurcombe, said: "I am delighted to present the report on the Estyn Inspection of Caldicot School. The inspection took place during November 2013 in which we were able to show all facets of the school to the inspection team.

"It can be seen that our school has continued to show rapid progress to reach these levels of achievement and we have also shown that all is in place so that we continue to do so. Many congratulations to staff and pupils on such a successful inspection."
