PENALLT Tennis Club has hosted its annual tournament, with club members competing over the space of a fortnight.

There were some tricky winds to contend with but the final Sunday was warm and sunny, and pleasant for both players and spectators.

The mixed tournament was completed in the first weekend with fewer three set marathons than last year.

In fact the only huge game was between Chris and Rosie Adams and Neil and Alison O'Doherty. Chris and Rosie won that contest, but were then beaten by Seamus Cooper and Steph Howell in the final.

The final of the plate competition was between Bob and Michele Hall and Dave Guppy and Karen Rollings, with Dave and Karen winning the title.

In the ladies singles Fiona Creasey and Liz Clarke had a close match, with Fiona just winning. Steph Howell and Nicky Hutchings were the two finalists and, after a long match, Steph eventually wore Nicky down to win in three sets.

The final of the plate was between Liz Clarke and Rosie Adams, with Liz winning in two sets.

The men's singles had its share of close contests with a three set match between Chris Adams and Dave Guppy – with Dave winning the third set 6-4.

The plate semi-final between Martin Dean and Adrian Harman-Bishop was a very lengthy match. Martin lost the first set on a tie break, but after 2 hours was the eventual winner.

The men's final for the cup was a hard hitting contest between Paul Hazlewood and James Wright, with Paul winning in two sets.

In the ladies doubles there was a close match between Joan Hollick and Jutta Hadfield and Katie Farrington and Rachel Widdicks, with Katie and Rachel winning the third set.

Both semi-finals were keenly contested. Steph Howell and Sally Williams won 7-6 6-4 against Karen Rollings and Liz Clarke.

In the other semi Nicki Hutchings and Ginny Higgins won 7-6 6-3 against Rosie Adams and Jane Bryan. Nicki and Ginny then went on to win the final.

Sue Jenkins and Lynne Morris won the plate competition beating Lynda Thornycroft and Michele Hall in the final (pictured).

There was a close semi-final in the men's doubles between Neil O'Doherty and Peter Howe and Mark Thornycroft and Paul Hazlewood, with Mark and Paul winning 7-6 6-4.

Mark and Paul went on to take the title, defeating Chris Adams and Chris Hollick in the final.

The plate competition kept the audience amused for some time. It was played between Charles Boase and David Reed and Bob Hall and Martin Dean.

Charles and David were up in the third set but Bob and Martin managed to save eight match points before David and Charles finally finished them off.
