DIVISION 2 leaders of the East Gwent Senior League, Severn Bridge, may face disciplinary action after their final match of the season – at Severn Tunnel B – was abandoned in the 75th minute.
Referee Adam Needs halted the match at Rogiet Sportsfield after he was, allegedly, threatened by a spectator.
Tunnel had taken a two-goal lead but despite having a player sent off in the first half, Bridge fought back to level at 2-2.
A Severn Bridge player who would not give his name, said: "The trouble started when a free kick was awarded to Tunnel just outside Severn Bridge's
penalty area.
"The player who was going to take the free kick, moved the ball forward and a spectator shouted at him to move it back.
"I think the ref thought the abuse was aimed at him and he went to talk to the spectator."
It appears that the referee ordered the man to leave the sideline – which he refused to do and the situation escalated from there resulting in the referee abandoning the game.
The player added: "It was a sad end to what could have been a great season for us. I'm appalled with what happened and it should never be seen on any football pitch especially when the referees give up their own time to let us have a game of football! I'm gutted!"
Dave Jones, Severn Bridge FC's secretary said: "I have started an internal investigation into what happened (yesterday) and I can assure the public that the club will deal with this very severely. It is indeed a great shame after the way the season has gone. It is very disappointing."
The club now faces the prospect of a disciplinary charge and hearing although no information on if or when that will happen, is known as yet.
Severn Bridge are in their first season in the league and have enjoyed a successful season.
Although leading Division 2, they could still be overtaken by Underwood SC B who were held 1-1 at home by Chepstow Town B at the weekend.
Underwood have one more match – at home to Mathern FC B – and three points gained in that match would see them crowned as champions.
Severn Tunnel B manager Ron Atkins told his players not to get involved in the altercation.
"It was one Bridge supporter causing trouble and not the team," he said. "I kept my boys out of it. We are disappointed for the Bridge because it marred a great first season for them and we wish them luck next year."
