MADAM,

Currently I am working on the eccentric life of John Arthur Evans,[1854 to 1936], and I hope that by writing to you some readers may remember him?

Known lovingly, as ‘Hokey Pokey,’ he was born in Monmouth and lived at number 4, St James’ Street and after the sad early death of his wife, Eliza, moved as a semi-recluse to the Kymin.

Many lucky Monmouth people see his magnificent work hanging on their walls every day.

The artist sometimes painted local scenes on pieces of cardboard etc, and sold them cheaply.

If you can help me in any way with my research, I would be most grateful. I wish to tell an accurate tale.

The illusrated talk on the life and work of Monmouth’s artist, ‘Hokey Pokey’ is scheduled for 2pm on Tuesday 17th November at the Shire Hall.

You can contact me on 01600 772849 or at [email protected].
