USK in Bloom hosted a special visit from Welsh Secretary Stephen Crabb to highlight the three decades of gardening floral excellence that has gained Usk the reputation as the 'Town of Flowers'.

 After a presentation of 'In Bloom' work, Mr Crabb met with volunteers on Thursday morning (16th April) to discuss the projects they are undertaking for 2015.

 He then joined David Davies, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Monmouth, to plant a plum tree in the new community orchard at the Sessions House.

 In recognition of consistent performance, having won the Wales in Bloom small rural town category for 33 years in a row, Usk in Bloom has been nominated as the first ever Welsh community to compete for RHS Britain in Bloom's most prestigious award – the Champion of Champions.

Usk is one of just six UK finalists and will battle for victory this summer against Bath, Truro, Norton in Hales, Market Bosworth and Filby.

Mr Davies added: "It goes without saying that the work of the Usk in Bloom committee in the local community has been immeasurable in promoting the picturesque qualities of the town as a destination venue.

 "Indeed, what a great privilege it was for Usk to be hand-picked to host a visit by the Duchess of Cornwall last year as part of RHS Britain in Bloom's 50th anniversary celebrations. I was honoured to be present that day.

 "There is no doubt in my mind that Usk is the best in Britain!"

Usk in Bloom Chair, Tony Kear said: "Our incredibly hard working volunteers were delighted by the support and genuine interest shown by the Secretary of State about our work and the Champion of Champions accolade. The planting of a plum tree on our new community orchard will be a long lasting reminder and a tremendous start to our 35th anniversary season.

 "I am very proud that Wales is setting such high standards and Usk in Bloom is at the forefront of this," said Mr Crabb.

 "It was a great pleasure to see what the community has achieved through hard work and congratulations must go the volunteers – past and present – who give their time in incredible quantities to ensure Usk's crown as the 'Town of Flowers' does not slip.

 "To be the first Welsh community chosen to enter the Champion of Champions competition is a wonderful accolade for Usk and I wish everyone involved the very best of luck."
