TEAMS of walkers from across Monmouthshire could make a difference this summer when the 12th Forest of Dean Relay For Life event takes place.
The last weekend in June is set to be full of fun with event set to take place at Freedom Leisure Lydney, in aid of Cancer Research UK.
Relay For Life is an overnight family event that brings everyone in the community together to show that together people are stronger than cancer. The event celebrates cancer survivors, remembers those who have lost their lives to the disease and raises money to support the vital work of Cancer Research UK, to help beat cancer sooner.
People can get involved by becoming a team captain and entering a team, joining as a team member or by taking part as a cancer survivor.
Tess Tremlett, Forest of Dean Relay for Life, Committee Chair said: "This is the Forest of Dean Relay for Life’s 12th year and we’re still going strong!”
“The Forest event is recognised as one of the most established and successful in the UK and this is down to the work of the fantastic volunteers and businesses that kindly support us year after year. It’s their help that makes Forest of Dean Relay For Life such a special event. It’s definitely is an event that the whole community can get involved in.”
“Last years event was again a huge success, raising over £52,000 for Cancer Research UK. Every year we aim to grow bigger and better than ever and 2016 is set to be our best yet!”
“Within a few months of this year’s launch we’ve had 19 teams enter already, which is amazing, but we would love to see more. The committee and our entrants have set a target of raising £75,000 this year and we can only do this with the continued support of the local community.”
“We urge everyone to get involved and support this event by joining us on the 25th to 26th June.”
Julie Drew, Forest of Dean Relay For Life, Team Recruitment Chair added: “Team registration is open, so if you’re thinking of entering a team, please do it now!"
"Get involved with your family, friends and colleagues.”
“Team Captains must be over 18, but anyone can join your team once you register. Ideally, teams should be made up of eight to 15 people and once your team is signed up you can start fundraising together.”
“If you know someone who has already entered a team and you would like to take part but don’t have enough people to make up your own team, then ask the team captain if you can join them as a member or contact us as we have teams who would welcome you join them.”
“If you are a cancer survivor, we welcome you to take part as a guest of honour.”
“The Forest of Dean Relay for Life event is the only one of its kind in Gloucestershire and we would love to see teams joining us from the rest of the county and the surrounding towns and cities, such as Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud, Chepstow, Ross-on-Wye and districts like Monmouthshire, Herefordshire and the Cotswolds. If anyone is thinking of entering a team, we urge them to get in touch as soon as possible.”
Tess Tremlett, Forest of Dean Relay For Life, Committee Chair, concluded: “Each and every one of us will be affected by cancer in our lives, either from having the disease ourselves or seeing a family member, friend or colleague suffer. Relay for Life is our way of joining the fight against cancer in our community by raising funds that go towards finding a cure for this terrible disease."
