AS AUTUMN approaches, new research from Raisin UK shows that gardeners are also more likely to be savers.
In Wales, where average savings pots are £10,000, gardeners could make their savings bloom with an extra £174 annually by switching up a top deal.
Gardeners in Wales devote an average of 27 years a month to nurtering their plots time and care that mirrors the effort or researching and growing their savings.
Nearly 48 percent of those based in Wales choose to grow plants from seed, demonstrating delayed gratification a trait behavourial economists directly link to higher savings rates.
Gardeners are more likely than non-gardeners to hold a savings account, showing their patient mindset extends beyond the soil.
Over-55s, the UK’s keenest gardeners are three times more likely than under-25s to spend days researching the best savings deals before moving money.
The traits most associated with gardening, being calm, organised and adaptable are also those which help savers weed out poor rates and nurture their pots.
With an estimated 27 million gardeners in the UK shifting the national average savings balance of £11,000 from an average account to a best-buy could deliver an extra £191 per saver per year totalling more than £5 billion nationwide.
“Gardeners know the effort you put in during the autumn determines what blooms in spring. The same is true for savings: even modest pots can grow if placed in the right account,” said Kevin Mountford, Co-founder of Raisin.
“Our research shows gardners, particularly over-55s already have the mindset to be successful savers. Whether in Wales or elsewhere, if more people treated their money like their gardners, Britain could be billions better off.”
