A POPULAR cycling event that welcomed thousands of cyclists to Monmouthshire will not run again next year.

Organisers of Velothon Wales announced last week that the event would not take place in 2019. First held in 2015, the event involved thousands of cyclists, but prompted some concerns from residents, particularly near Usk, who felt the race caused more problems than it was worth.

Last year a shorter 60 kilometre route set off from Usk, with claims it could provide “huge opportunities” for businesses in the area.

Previously organised by Ironman, this year’s Velothon was organised by Run4Wales, after issued reported over the previous three events included delays caused by extended road closures, litter and lack of toilets for Velothon participants.

According to a report which went before Monmouthshire councillors in 2016, the Velothon cost the council around £20,000 in 2017; £2,000 of which included additional road sweeping and clearing litter. A similar cost was expected for this year’s event.

An official statement from the organisers read: “Following detailed discussions between the Velothon series owners Ironman, the Welsh Government Major Events Unit and local event delivery partners Run4Wales, we can now confirm there are no plans for Velothon Wales to continue in 2019 and beyond.

“Despite a successful event in 2018, in which more than 8,000 riders took part across three distances, it is unfortunate that we are unable to find a sustainable model for future events.

“The event showcased Wales at its best and welcomed UCI professional road racing alongside 40,000 amateur riders, who were given truly unforgettable experience on closed roads between 2015 and 2018.

“We would like to thank the people of Wales, each and every person who took part and the numerous stakeholder and partner agencies who made the event possible. As well as inspiring the next generation of Welsh cyclists, the Velothon leaves a legacy that confirms Wales’ position as a cycling destination and host for major global cycling events.”
