The winter die back often gives us the opportunity to tidy up our gardens or plan ahead for summer displays - in the case of the Usk Junior Football Club it revealed a rather unsightly mixture of beer bottles, cans, plastic bottles, car tyres and other unmentionable things.
Led by UJFC Chairman Colin Philips, a joint initiative with Usk in Bloom saw a planned litter / rubbish pick with 20 volunteers across the two groups to tidy up these important sporting and public open spaces.
It was also an opportunity to explain about such importance to the In Bloom campaign.
Usk in Bloom chairman Tony Kear said "Its obvious that UJFC take greats pride in the provision of football facilities and opportunities for local children. Its important that they play in a safe and clean environment too. Usk prides itself on its community involvement and today was a great team effort to promote the importance of keeping public open spaces clear from rubbish. We can now look into grant funding through the Tidy Wales Campaign for appropriate rubbish bins to avoid the future build up of the rubbish again."
And to finish off, the numerous bags collected were taken to the Usk Recycling centre in Maryport Street Car Park.
