USK in Bloom is calling on the help of the community to complete its latest project which will feature in a TV show.
The upgrade of a neglected area at the entrance to the main car park in Maryport Street will be taking place on the weekend on the 27th, 28th and 29th May as will be some filming for an upcoming BBC2 show ‘Blooming Marvellous.’
While the group has already received support from volunteers and donations for the upgrade, it still requires things such as skips, a digger and paving to make the project a reality.
Usk in Bloom chairman Tony Kear said: “We are appealing to the locals to help us with the manual work and looking for somebody with a digger and some skips.
“We have been promised the soil and plants but we are also looking for paving, stones and materials for the paths.
“We are asking for goods in kind, like getting the digger for a day, we simply don’t have the funds to get it ourselves.
“We are a charity and we don’t have that kind of money.”
Any more support Usk in Bloom can receive will be in addition to a significant amount already dedicated to the day.
They have received grant funding from the RHS and the Roger Edwards Educational Trust, and Morris’s of Usk Garden Centre donated soil and numerous plants.
All this work will be a culmination of a two year process to transform the area, the new garden has been designed by Monmouth garden designer Cheryl Cummings for free and will celebrate the Usk Girl Guides 100th anniversary.
Mr Kear said: “It’s been planned for over two years now, this is very much a neglected area of the town which has gathered weeds , rubbish and dog poop, it is one of the busiest areas.
“We are putting in place this new garden with a view for permanent and insect friendly pollinating plants. It is specifically themed and we are working in conjunction with Usk Girl Guides.”
The upgrade will also be a part of Usk in Bloom’s Wales and Britain in Bloom entries.
Anyone who can help to source the required materials or equipment or can volunteer in any other way should contact [email protected] or visit their Facbook page Usk in Bloom - The Town of Flowers.
