For the last year there has been a renegade tweeter posting as @chepstowcastle, making the officials at Cadw a little hot under the collar.

The anonymous tweeter bagged the twitter name before the new custodian of the castle, Ryan Evans, managed to take the name for the official social media of Chepstow Castle and Cadw.

Instead, the official twitter name is @chepstow_cadw, which has 3,960 followers compared to @chepstowcastle who has 11,475.

"I have contacted twitter about the rogue account," says Ryan Evans of Cadw, "I originally asked the owner of @chepstowcastle if they would hand the name over to us as they were not using it at the time but I recieved no response. Almost immediately the owner of the name started posting.

"Originally we were not so bothered but there were a couple of offensive posts which came to the attention of Cadw which reflected badly on the castle.

"After that I complained to Twitter, since their policy is that it is not allowed to impersonate people or an institution."

"The other problem is that the person doing the tweeting has published some incorrect tweets. Recently an event was advertised on the wrong day, which is clearly unhelpful for people who want to visit us."

Ryan is still waiting to hear back from Twitter officials.

In the mean time, @chepstowcastle continues to tweet in their inimitable (and often irreverent) style.

No-one knows the identity of @chepstowcastle, however, the Beacon has managed to catch up with them online and ask a few questions:

When did you decide to start tweeting for Chepstow castle?

Well, I live in or very near to Chepstow, and, while walking though the Dell last summer I had one of those silly 'I wonder what it would say if it could speak' thoughts. At the time I had just joined Twitter as myself, so I did a search to see if the castle was there and nope, nothing.

"I felt sorry the castle was so neglected so decided to help it out and registered @ChepstowCastle – the rest as that say, is history.

What gives you your interest in history and Chepstow?

I have lived in Chepstow most of my life after moving here as a child from Cheltenham. With regards to history, its all around. Both you and I are forming part of the past just by existing, so I think, without realising it, we are all interested in history, its simply a matter of taking the time to notice.

Are you aware that Cadw are cross with you? What do you feel about that?

Oh yes, they initially sent me a DM [direct message on twitter] asking if they could take over the account (I did not reply). They have since made it very clear they have complained to Twitter, however, as by now they will realise, I have done nothing wrong and Twitter have dismissed the complaint.

What do you do when you are not @ChepstowCastle?

I am a company director and also own some small investments that I manage. I'm also partial to the odd glass of decent wine in the company of interesting people.
