THIS year saw the third Trellech Big Weekend take place, with a wide range of activities going on throughout the village.
Held on Friday 17th to Sunday 19th July, the event saw music, history, play, dogs and wine– though not all at the same time – and beautiful sunshine pretty much the whole weekend too.
The Trellech Big Weekend brings together companies and organisations in the village including the Village Hall, The Lion Inn, Busy Bodies playgroup, Wye Valley Doctors Practice, St Nicholas’s Church, the Methodist Church and The Lost City of Trellech (the archaeological dig).
The events were funded by some of the money raised by Trellech Teas over the previous 12 months so that everything was either free or heavily subsidised.
Although the focus of the weekend was on fun and not money-making, some events raised funds, and this year more than £2,000 was raised.
Highlights of the weekend included a very successful wine tasting supper hosted by Peter Ayling at the Village Hall; the open gardens with 12 sites open in and around the village; the village walk run by local archaeologist Stuart Wilson, and the charity music event at The Lion Inn which helped raise £400 for Ben’s Bonkers Bike Bonanza in aid of the British Heart Foundation.
The Dog Show was popular too and helped raise more than £100 for Monmouth Food Bank.
The Big Weekend was also an opportunity for those working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Awards to contribute to the community.
Teenagers Jack Zsigo and Zoe McIntosh have both been involved, with Jack helping raise money for the church and Zoe contributing to Trellech Teas over the last few months.
Sarah Whiddett, co-ordinator of the weekend, said: “This was the best Big Weekend so far and it is a testament to the great community we have in Trellech that so many people got involved.
“Huge thanks have to go to everyone who helped organise the events that ran over the weekend and ‘thank you’ to all who came along, took part and enjoyed themselves.”
