Fundraisers for Ruby Atkins from Rogeit took to their bikes last Thursday (4th September) and cycled 300 miles from Paris to Magor. The bike ride pushed the tot over her fundraising target of £40,000 for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery, currently not funded on the NHS. SDR surgery combined with physiotherapy will help Ruby to walk unaided. The four riders, including Ruby's dad Antony Atkins, Mark Eden, Jon Lee and Jack Rowland received a heroes welcome as they crossed the finish line at Undy Athletic Club at 4.30pm where there was a funday in full swing for the three-year-old. Antony said: "The cycle was mentally challenging, being on the road for 10 hours a day and seeing field after field is a bit draining. "We kept ourselves busy with a game of eye spy. "The team was overwhelmed when we got back as there were so many people there to see us." Family friend Andy Hosking will be walking 100km from Putney Bridge to Henley on Thames this Saturday (13th September) and will be walking all through the night. Ruby was born prematurely at 30 weeks and was diagnosed last year with bilateral cerebral palsy meaning her ability to walk unaided is restricted. SDR treatment, currently not provided on the NHS, involves entering the spinal cord via a vertebrae and cutting the portion that carries messages from the brain to the legs. Ruby's parents will be meeting with the SDR team at Great Ormond Street at the end of November.
