AS USK prepares for this year’s Wales in Bloom, a recently renovated area of the town has fallen victim to reckless vandalism.

Winners of Wales in Bloom 1982-2018 have been gearing up for what they hope will be their 37th straight win, in the ’large village’ category by preparing the town with decadent displays for flower boxes and other town decorations.Unfortunately only a few days after the Wales in Bloom judges had visited the town on the 4th July, flowers were vandalised and litter was left at the butterfly display as well as the display by the Co-op supermarket.CCTV is being reviewed to try and find the culprits.Wales in Bloom is the regional element of the National Britain in Bloom Competition supported by the Royal Horticultural Society, where towns and villages compete to see which can impress the judges with floral displays and eye-pleasing renovations.Usk in Bloom chairman Tony Kear said: "A fantastic day was enjoyed when Usk in Bloom welcomed Wales in Bloom Judge John Woods on his tour. Judging criteria covers horticulture, community and environment and there was  plenty to show how the community of Usk works together for a better town, showing the floral displays, environmental sustainability, some private gardens, Usk Primary School, our heritage history and approach to conservation."Volunteers and supporters of Usk in Bloom contribute in many ways throughout the whole year towards, not only competition judging, but that Usk remains a vibrant and attractive place for visitors and residents alike. Fingers are firmly crossed for a successful outcome at the results and awards ceremony on 13th September in Ystradgynlais."
