Earlier this month, the Savoy Theatre and Cinema in Church Street was named Wales Theatre of the year at the fourth Welsh Hospitality Awards in Cardiff, an award which highlights the transformation of the Savoy’s fortunes over the past decade. Ten years ago this month the theatre was in a perilous situation, facing not just bankruptcy but closure. It is thanks to the enthusiasm, determination and persistence of the staff, volunteers and trustees that the Savoy is now going from strength to strength.

This award comes at the end of an exciting year for the Savoy. The comfort of theatregoers has been much improved by the extension and upgrading of the theatre’s ground floor toilets. Plans are now underway to refurbish the dress circle loos and to make the theatre as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible, building on our status as a plastic free business.

You may have seen that the block of properties in Church Street, of which the Savoy is part, is up for sale. Any new owner will purchase the theatre subject to the Savoy Trust’s existing business lease so nothing will change in the event of the freehold changing hands.

Thank you to everyone who supports the Savoy in whatever way – it’s only with your support that the Savoy will continue to flourish as a great facility for everyone in Monmouth.
