John Humphreys of Usk (letters 4th September) suggests the UK should leave the European Union so we can embrace trading with the world. Doesn’t he realise we already do so, thanks to the great deals struck by the world’s largest trading block. If we leave the EU any trade talks will take a long time to be agreed, and as a single medium-sized nation we lack the negotiating power of 28 united countries with a combined population of over half a billion citizens.

The best deal is the one we currently enjoy. We would be crazy to exchange it and lay ourselves open to predatory economies like Trump’s USA and China, putting our agriculture, NHS, service and manufacturing sectors at risk as well as our food and environmental standards.
