A CHEPSTOW teenager has completed a 1,000 mile cycle ride to raise money for Parkinson's UK. Jess Taylor, 13, took on the Land's End to John O'Groats cycling challenge for her grandmother Sandra Wanless, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2006 at the age of 59. Sandra is also secretary of the Parkinson's UK branch in Swindon. Jess cycled alongside her dad Paul Taylor, 41. The pair began their challenge on Saturday 5th April and finished at John O'Groats on Saturday 19th April at 7pm. Jess and Paul have raised over £1,600 for Parkinson's UK and donations are still pouring in. Jess said: "I cycled for my grandmother who has Parkinson's and I'm very happy that dad and I completed the challenge. "Gran said I'd be emotional at the finish but I said I'd be okay. "I did shed a few tears though as I was so happy to complete the cycle ride and to be able to help her. "I can't remember a time when gran didn't have Parkinson's. I guess it's just part of her personality to me, but I do know that her Parkinson's symptoms will get worse. "When that happens I want a cure to be there waiting for her. I know so many people with Parkinson's, not just my grandmother, and they are not all old. "When I was 11, I was diagnosed with cyclical vomiting syndrome. "I was very ill and it was hard for my mum to look after me as I was at boarding school in Stroud, while she was at home in Chester. "I turned to my grandmother for support at the time and now I'm glad I've been able to do something to help her. The cycle was one the biggest challenges I have ever taken on and I can now say 'I've done that.'" Jess trained for the challenge by regularly cycling the 30 miles from her home to her school. Paul Jackson-Clark, director of fundraising at Parkinson's UK, said: "I'd like to say a big thank you and congratulations to Jess and Paul for completing their epic ride. "Jess and Paul have not only raised vital funds, but they have helped to us to spread the word and raise awareness of Parkinson's. "We are very proud of them and hope that their story will inspire others to take on one of our cycling events in the summer months." The funds raised by Jess and Paul will allow the charity to continue with its vital research work to find a cure, and improve the lives of the 127,000 people in the UK who are living with Parkinson's.
