MADAM, If you are a UKIP supporter you could be forgiven for feeling glum right now. After a long, hard campaign we ended up with just one MP and no leader. But I would urge supporters to stay positive and look at the progress being masked by the headlines. UKIP received more votes than the SNP and Lib Dems combined. We came second in 120 seats. With nearly 4 million votes we are now the third biggest party in British politics. That we had little success on paper is no reflection on UKIP, its policies or its ex-leader but reflects instead on an outdated and broken voting method that has not kept pace with modern political evolution. The first-past-the-post system was suitable for a two-party state but with more than six parties now gaining significant support it is no longer fit for purpose. Indeed it acts merely to entrench the biggest parties in defiance of any notion of democratic justice. The Conservatives will crow about their victory but in reality they only got three times the UKIP vote. That they got 330 times the UKIP representation is not even in the same universe as fair in my opinion. I am no supporter of the Green Party but their one million votes deserve more than one MP too. In the coming parliament, UKIP must campaign for electoral reform so that in future elections the votes it receives result in representation rather than being cast into a democratic black hole as now. We must also fight hard to get members into the Welsh Assembly next year. If the PR system were applied to our current support we could be looking at 10 AMs in 2016; a result that would re-ignite the UKIP campaign across the UK and create pressure for a free and fair debate in the 2017 EU referendum, as well as setting us up nicely for 2020. I would like to end by thanking everyone who voted UKIP. You helped make this election a real battle for the other parties. You should be proud that you are standing up for real freedom and self determination for your nation. Like me you disdain the idea of exchanging freedom for trade. Like me, you believe that Britain is more than just a star on someone else's flag. I urge you to stay strong. The fight goes on. Victory lies ahead. Gareth Dunn (UKIP candidate, Monmouth)
