A petition handed in to the Welsh Assembly in April requesting a lowered speed limit on the A48 bridge in Chepstow has been recommended for refusal.

Campaigners working on the petition have been left disappointed after receiving a letter from the Welsh Assembly's chair of petitions stating: "The speed limit review has now been undertaken and it considered pedestrian usage, accidents and any change in residential development.

"It has recommended the current speed limit on the bridge is retained, which Gwent Police support."

Petition officials will now consider the recommendation at a meeting on 8th October.

Town councillors were angered by the recommendation, which jeopardises the project headed by A Level students at Wyedean School. The campaigners want to see the speed limit on the bridge lowered from 50mph to 30mph.

The petition, signed by 1,200 people, was delivered to the steps of the Senedd by students and town councillors on 24th April.

"We should comment and make it a most robust comment," said councillor Peter Farley. "the fact that the road is used by school children reflects the gravity of the issue to the council. We need to write in the strongest terms."

Councillor Beach said: "If they aren't going to lower the limit, at least they could put a barrier up for goodness sake."

"Why have they got such an aversion to lowering the limit? It doesn't need to be 50mph," added councillor Jane Robbins.

The council expressed its concerns over the future of traffic flow on the road, with more housing estates planned for its route.

"We should consider voicing our opinions to the transport minister.

"We know the area, we know the road and we know what the future holds," said councillor Armand Watts.

"One day there is going to be another sad local event where we are going to sad and very angry that the minister hasn't got a grip and lowered the limit."
