ON Saturday 6th February, the district finals were held for the Rotary Youth Speaks Competition in Maisemore Hall, Gloucester.

Chepstow School entered teams for both the intermediate and senior bands. The intermediate team (age 11-13 years) spoke on 'technology' and was comprised of speaker Sophie Oliver and vote of thanks Carys Hughes, under their chairperson Sophie Oliver.

The senior team (14-17 years) spoke on 'bring back page 3' and was chaired by Miranda Jones with speaker Emily Williams and vote of thanks Polly Summers.

The large audience very much enjoyed both presentations that were both contentious and amusing.

This four stage competition is designed to support and encourage the development of effective communication skills. It offers young people experience in speaking on a public platform as a member of a team, discipline in dealing with a topic in a limited time and the opportunity of learning and practicing high standards of expression, presentation and appearance.

The Youth Speaks competition is just one of the events organised by Rotary for young people and are intended to develop their extra-curricular skills. They are also useful to future employers in showing above average enthusiasm and interests.
