THE Severn Bridge swapped cars for runners on Sunday, 27th August as 2,000 people participated in the annual Severn Bridge Half Marathon.

Now in its fourth year the event, which now includes a 10k run, begins at the start of the old Severn Bridge.

This year was one of the best yet with glorious sunshine enjoyed by both runners and spectators alike.

This year was the first time the organisers had introduced a 10k which proved popular with more than 500 runners taking on the shorter challenge.

Every runner finishing the race received a medal, a technical t-shirt and a goody bag with various food items and a drink.

There were many exhausted but elated expressions on the faces of those crossing the finish line.

Niki Morgan from the race organising team said: “I am delighted with how well the event went.  There has been a great deal of hard work put in by our superb marshals and helpers, from Chepstow Harriers, and our charity partners, St. David’s Hospice Care and Winston’s Wish.

“Basepoint generously sponsored the event for the fourth year running, and Up and Running provided some of the prizes.  We are indebted to all of them because without them the event simply could not have taken place, and they have truly made it the success it is.

“It is also extremely heartening to see the runners achieving their aims, whether that’s just to get round, to break their personal best time or win the race.”

The first 3 men finishing in the half marathon in order were Phil Matthews from Swansea Harriers, Richard Waldron from Southampton AC and Rich Ayling from Avon Valley Runners.

For the women the first three finishers in order were Kath Matthews from Chepstow Harriers, Lynette Porter from Bitton Road Runners, and Kelly Dicks from Great Western Runners.

As for the 10k run, in the mens Steven Castle from Staple Hill Runners finished first while Gareth Partridge from Obstafit Runners and Ben Spooner followed.

In the womens Laura Wright from Cardiff AAC was fastest followed by Lou Summers from Pontypool and District Running Club and Johanne Morgan-Rolfe.
