MADAM,

Our town council voted on Monday in favour of having advertising displayed beside Monnow Bridge. That is the consequence of its decision not to support reconnecting the classic and iconic 1930s phone box in Agincourt Square and instead to keep the hideous 1960s box at Monnow Bridge whose only use is to be covered in adverts.

Monmouth Civic Society has been campaigning for the Agincourt Square box to be kept as the town centre’s functioning phone box, but councillors decided without any discussion they would prefer to keep it as so much theme-park tat. Not one of them came up with a single idea of what it might be used for. But they all they agreed that the last thing a phone box should be used for was making calls.

If you want to help the Civic Society to save this phone box, please write to the Monmouth Town Ward County Councillor, c/o Members’ Secretary, County Hall, Usk NP15 1GA (you can use the internal post service at the Rolls Hall). The Civic Society’s next meeting is at Ty Price on Wednesday 25th July at 7pm.

Charles Boase

(Chairman, Monmouth Civic Society)
