Three-year-old Ruby Atkins has had a successful meeting at Great Ormond Street and is getting closer to funding the operation that will enable her to walk unaided. Ruby was born prematurely at 30 weeks and was diagnosed last year with bilateral cerebral palsy, meaning her ability to walk unaided is restricted. £40,000 is needed for an operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) which would reduce spasticity in her legs. Combined with physiotherapy, the treatment will enable her to walk unaided. Rachael and Antony Atkins, Ruby's parents, had a consultation at Great Ormond Street Hospital at the end of last month and were given the next steps. Antony said: "The consultation went really well. "They are keen for Ruby to have botox treatment before they consider her for the operation." The botox will achieve the same results as the operation but it is a temporary fix and only lasts a few weeks. Doctors will inject into several places in Ruby's legs. The botox will relax her muscles, making it easier when she does her physio. How Ruby responds to the botox will act as a good indication of how effective the SDR treatment would be. Ruby's parents will meet with a specialist at Nevill Hall hospital next month where the couple are hopeful to set a date for the tot to have botox. In the meantime there are plenty of events planned for Ruby. On Sunday 22nd June from 12pm to 4pm there will be an afternoon tea held for the toddler at Redwick village hall with a raffle, bric a brac stall, face painting and an appearance from a Disney Princess.
