MADAM,

An ear-splitting squeal of brakes lasting several seconds suddenly burst upon the silence as I worked in the garden last Thursday evening and I waited for the crash that must inevitably follow but thank goodness it did not come.

I went out into Mitchell Troy’s Common Road to investigate. The vehicle, whatever it was, had disappeared off down the hill but it had left these tyre tracks as its calling card.

Just a few yards further up the road is this faded ’slow’ sign so close to the bend that I guess many motorists don’t really notice it.

So whoever is responsible for highway maintenance in these parts, please leap into action now because it would be terrible if someone was killed or seriously injured for want of a lick of paint.

Nigel Heath
