The Rotary Club's 'Walk The Wye' event, held on Sunday 10th May attracted a record 331 walkers from as far afield as Bath, Birmingham and Bridgend.

The valley scenery was at its springtime best, despite the overcast skies, with bluebells and wild garlic in flower, and fresh green leaves on the trees

Many walkers entered into the fun spirit of the day and turned out in a variety of pink outfits. Sarah Johns from Monmouth, pictured, dressed as a fairy, won the award as the most outrageously dressed walker. She also donated the amazing sum of £542 of sponsorship money that she had raised in support of the breast cancer research team at Velindre.

The annual walk event was organised by the Rotary Clubs of Monmouth, Chepstow and Ross on Wye to raise sponsorship money specifically for breast cancer research.

Bob Handley, president of the Monmouth Rotary Club said: "We were very pleased with the number of walkers who joined the seven different walks between Chepstow, Monmouth and Kerne Bridge. We received almost £1,000 in sponsorship money on the day, with many more walkers still collecting donations from their sponsors. It looks like being a very successful event. I ask everybody to give generously, to support both the walkers who made such a tremendous effort, and the breast cancer research team at Velindre."

Walk co-ordinator, Rotarian Norman Williams, said: "It was great to see so many walkers enjoying the day, and the various walks that we'd organised. The unique formula of taking walkers up or down the valley by bus, and letting them stroll back to Monmouth in their own time, along the banks of the Wye, was much appreciated."

The Rotary Clubs would like to thank all those who helped make the day such a success.

In particular, Monmouth Show Ground committee for providing an excellent venue for the event, H & H Motors for providing the bus transport, Eagle Plant for the site facilities, Subway for providing bottled water, and St John's Ambulance personnel for keeping a watchful eye on everybody. And last, but not least, all the walkers.
