SIR, The arguments for and against Waitrose charging for parking have been well made by your correspondents. What is not clear is whether the now empty parking spaces are because of fewer customers or whether the charge has succeeded in deterring non-Waitrose shoppers. Nevertheless, what is clear is that this policy, and the inconvenient way in which it operates, is causing considerable ill will and if the management is listening they need to have a re-think before Christmas when customers can be queueing at a check-out for nearly half an hour. I would think that the obvious solution is for people to take a ticket at the barrier (which can be stamped at the check out) to give them free parking for an hour or so, and for non-Waitrose customers to be charged.
