THE railings surrounding the war memorial in St James' Square were damaged by what locals have described as a lorry manoeuvring around the cenotaph.

Monmouthshire County Council are appealing for witnesses and commented: "Officers are aware of the incident and the damage to the railings. 

"We appeal to the public for any information about the vehicle so that we may approach the owner. 

"Work will be commissioned shortly to carry out a repair."
