CHEPSTOW Racecourse hosted an eco-friendly family race day on Sunday 31st July with its ’Go Green’ event. It was arranged in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy, and was overlooked by the student ‘eco committee’ of Chepstow Comprehensive school who created an energy plan for the race course.
Alongside the races, Keep Wales Tidy ran a ‘green zone’ with eight different eco workshops available in the marquee. Other attractions included a bicycle-powered disco.
The highlight of the day was when 15 mascots representing a range of sports teams and businesses had a footrace on the track. The mascots completed the course with vastly varying degrees of success, but succeeded in raising £1,500 for Keep Wales Tidy. The winner of the mascot race was the Pontypool Panda.
Chris Partridge of Keep Wales Tidy said: “It was a great day, we got the kids involved with eco activities like making flower bombs. They especially enjoyed making the recycled cardboard city.
“The kids got their parents and grandparents involved too, which was great to see. Hundreds of children joined in, and they had some very switched on ideas about making the racecourse greener.
“The mascot race was a highlight, with 15 different mascots racing. The mascots were all sponsored for £100 each, with the fundraised money going to Keep Wales Tidy.”
