THE results for the South Wales East region have shown positive signs for UKIP in this year’s Welsh Assembly election.

The party has gained two seats in the Assembly, with Mark Reckless and David Rowlands being selected to represent the area.

Oscar Asghar of the Welsh Conservatives and Steffan Lewis of Plaid Cymru also scooped one seat each.

The voting turnout for the region was 42 per cent and figures are showing a 9.9 per cent swing from Labour to UKIP.

Both UKIP and Plaid Cymru have made gains with a 13 per cent increase for the party in purple and a three per cent increase for Leanne Wood’s Plaid Cymru.

Both Labour and Conservatives suffered losses in the area with support for Labour dipping by seven per cent and Conservatives dwindling to two per cent.
