CONCERNS have been raised by a local resident in order to unlawful parking in Chepstow, leading to discussions of increased pedestrianisation in the town centre.

At Chepstow town council’s meeting last week, the council agreed that unlawful parking was an issue but that pedestrianisation of the high street would not be a viable option for the town.

Councillor Yvonne Havard explained her opinion, stating that she believed the move would not benefit the town.

“I’m often annoyed with traffic on the high street, but stopping traffic on the high street would be a mistake,” she said.

Cllr Peter Farley felt that a review should take place to decide on the future of the high street, based on the pattern of pedestrianisation for markets currently in place. The town centre is closed for traffic once a month for the market to take placee

Cllr Beech said that she disagreed with the idea.

“The closure of Chepstow town centre to traffic on a regular basis would be detrimental to people passing through the town.”

It was however agreed that disabled access to the town centre would be improved, and it was decided that a review will take place in the future.
