A Chepstow poet has been crowned this year’s Bard in the annual Eisteddfod at Monmouth School for Girls.

16-year-old Lucy Badcock was deservedly named the Bard for her outstanding Welsh-themed poem in the popular competition, which involved the whole school, on Thursday March 2.

The Crowning of the Bard is one of the most important events in an eisteddfod, which celebrates the Welsh culture through music, drama and verse.

Seventeen-year-old Eleanor Moore, who lives near Ross-on-Wye, carried off the Blue Riband trophy for her wonderful contribution in the music competition.

The Eisteddfod was a huge success as the students enjoyed a day’s celebration of music and culture.

Points were awarded for each event with Imbert Terry winning the overall main House prize, defeating Mather Jackson to top spot. Prosser finished third and Bagnall Oakeley, fourth.

Headmistress, Mrs Jessica Miles, said: “I am extremely proud of everyone involved. The pupils showed such boundless energy and enthusiasm and gave their very best to showcase such wonderful talents during a memorable and high-quality Eisteddfod celebration.”
