A PROPOSED residential development of up to 200 dwellings located south of Mounton Road in Chepstow is set to come before Monmouthshire County Council’s planning committee next week.
The outline planning permission for the development which runs parallel to the A466 between the hospital traffic lights and the High Beech roundabout will be heard after an application was submitted back in July 2013 by property development company Taylor Wimpey.
The application includes plans for 123 market houses and 67 ‘affordable’ houses on the land west of the A466, as well as changes to the roundabout to accomodate increased traffic.
In the three years since its submission, the application has received more than 40 objections. A number of groups including Chepstow Town Council, Shirenewton and Mathern community councils have all recommended refusal.
Concerns raised across these objections include the increased traffic and population the development would bring which they say current infrastructure cannot deal with.
The developments location in a prescribed ‘Green Belt’ area, its proximity to the Grade Two listed building St Lawrence House and the point that the application does not fall within Monmouthshire County Council’s Local Development Plan are also raised.
Back in 2013 Mike Fenton, strategic planning manager at Taylor Wimpey, said: “Monmouthshire County Council is currently searching for suitable sites for additional houses to address a 900-home shortfall in its Local Development Plan.
“We believe that this site is a suitable alternative strategic site that could help the council supply the homes it needs.”
