MADAM, Last Wednesday (10th June) Margaret at the Green Dragon, St Thomas's Square, inaugurated the first in a series of History Talks – "Taking History to the People" – when 44 occupied the Lounge Bar. The well illustrated 'A History of Overmonnow' covered Drybridge House and street, Cinderhill, the floods, old shops and businesses, the Monnow Bridge, some outstanding art of Overmonnow and the beautiful St Thomas' Church. St Thomas' Church in Overmonnow is so attractive, rejoicing in much medieval architecture and style. The West Front, with its marvellous dragons teeth of a porch, makes it easy to think of it as truly Norman. But in fact it is a late 19th century restoration, very well done and in good taste and certainly one of the joys of Monmouth. The speaker would like to apologise to the members of his audience for his misleading remarks caused by the heat of the moment and too much excitement. The next in the series of history talks at the Green Dragon is at 7.30pm on Wednesday 22nd July. Tickets are £3 and are available from Margaret behind the bar. The name of the talk is "Monmouth Oddities and Curiosities". David J. Harrison (Monmouth)
