MADAM, Having recently spotted a photo in the Monmouthshire Beacon of a moth in a lady's garden locally, I thought the Beacon readers may like to see the photo of a Swallowtail Moth that visited me late on Friday night (17th July). He or she came through my porch window and rested on my computer, then on my hand, and finally above my porch inner door up high. It seemed very sleepy or tired and not very active. I researched online and yes it is definitely a Swallowtail, which I had thought initially was rather rare, having not seen such a large or beautiful specimen as this ever before, however they are said to be quite common in the UK. It was just very rare to actually see one as they are only nocturnal and not seen by many unless they are very keen moth watchers, so the information tells me. When he came to and got lively it was the following evening and I waited until it was dark to release him/ her back through the window; if I'd let him go in daylight the birds would have caught him which I didn't want to happen. As it was, he/ she didn't seem to want to leave me and kept walking back around my fingers towards me for a few minutes until I used my other hand to gently brush the lovely creature off.
