PLANS to build a solar farm consisting of 3,1779 panels at Shirenewton has been rejected by councillors.

The proposal was discussed for the third time yesterday (2nd December).

Situated at Rhewl Farm, Shirenewton, the solar farm would have generated a capacity of 7.9MW, serving approximately 2,000 homes a year.

The photovoltaic solar farm would have been situated across five fields currently used for pasture.

The solar farm would have contributed towards the Welsh Government's renewable energy target from non-wind power sources.

The plans were deferred last month by councillors surrounding concerns over the impact on the area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB).

Councillor Graham Down for Shirenewton said he would not support the plans. He said: "I continue to be of the view that it should be rejected because of the impact on the Monmouthshire countryside."

One resident objected to the plans, expressing concerns that her listed property would overlook the site. She said: "The property is a three storey building and the views from the south elevation, which is the main façade overlooks the proposed site.

"Taking into account the proposed screening of hedges at five/seven metres this still does not hide the views from the top two floors."

The decision was rejected with six votes to seven.
