EDUCATION leaders in Monmouthshire have welcomed the recent publication of the "Successful Futures" recommendations accepted by the Welsh Government.

The proposals, drawn up independently for the government by Professor Graham Donaldson, looks at all aspects of the curriculum and suggests guidance in changes to teaching methods.

Monmouthshire County Council's chief officer for children and young people, Sarah McGuinness, commented on the recommendations, saying: "Monmouthshire welcomes the publication of the 'Successful Futures' initiative.

"This progressive county is driving forward in its journey of continuous improvement within education, investing over £80m in developing 21st Century teaching and learning environments which embrace the digital world we live in.

"Our schools have already begun the process of reviewing their curriculum to ensure our young people in Monmouthshire can access an enriched offer focused on the four key purposes of the revised curriculum.

"The collaborative, creative and engaging environment in which education in Monmouthshire prides itself will ensure that good practice and innovation within our schools is shared for the benefit of all.

"I am also keen that our schools and our young people work with others across Wales on the design and development of the new curriculum.

As part of the recommendations, the Regional Education Consortia will be asked to identify primary and secondary Pioneer Schools, who will be invited to take the lead on the development and design of the new curriculum.
